Masterfoods USA, M&M’s

Initial Assignment: M&M’s brand group had booked an eight-page insert in Martha
Stewart Kids Magazine’s Christmas Issue and they didn’t have creative. The client
needed to jump start seasonal candy sales and promote their new web site called
“Bright Ideas.”


Solution: The Magazine Works team met with the client and proposed a creative
approach. Within 48 hours we had written copy, designed a layout and contacted
the magazine for premium placement. We identified models, contracted with a
photographer and an illustrator and had spreads to the client for approval the third
day thus insuring we would deliver film to the publication by the closing date.

Result: There were only 300,000 registered members of the “Bright Ideas” web site
prior to the insert and a million new members after the insert ran. Seasonal candy
sales increased from Thanksgiving to Christmas.

Subsequent Assignment: A gift with purchase book to promote the use of the
M&M’s, Snickers, Milky Way and Dove lines.


Solution: The Magazine Works team created a story book / cook book and won the
assignment based on concept. We encouraged the client to have well-known
children’s authors tell stories about the different holidays; we included word
games, crafts and activities to entertain children and suggested a softer sell.

Result: All 500,000 books were distributed before December 15th and The
Magazine Works
was hired to do a similar book for Easter distributed through
Simon Malls across the country. In addition, The Magazine Works created a special
edition of the book for exclusive distribution in CVS.
